THE HUNGER STRIKE IS OVER, BUT TORTURE CONTINUES
The Israeli government is marking this year’s International Day in Support of Victims of Torture (26 June) by finalizing a brutal law: the “Force-Feeding Bill”. The government intended to use the law to break the longest mass hunger-strike in the history of the Palestinian prisoners’ movement, which lasted for more than 60 days. Meanwhile, over 500 Palestinians in the West Bank have been arrested by Israel during a wide-scale military campaign in response to the disappearance of three Israeli teenage settlers; many of those arrested have received administrative detention orders. Media reports further indicate that Israeli interrogators received a “green light” to treat these new suspects as “ticking bombs”, which allows interrogators to use prohibited methods of torture and ill-treatment to obtain information. VIOLATION OF HUNGER-STRIKERS' RIGHTS
In recent weeks, Adalah undertook numerous legal actions to challenge the punitive measures taken by the Israel Prison Service (IPS) against the hunger-striking Palestinian prisoners. Adalah filed a petition demanding the cessation of shackling hunger-strikers to hospital beds 24 hours a day, and of preventing them from using the bathroom on a regular basis. Adalah also addressed the Attorney General (AG) demanding that he compel the IPS to cease obstructing lawyers' visits, to allow family visits and daily exits to the prison yards, and to allow the right of proper prayer.
TORTURE OF PALESTINIAN CHILDREN IN ISRAELI CUSTODY
Beatings, threats of rape, denial of food and water, deprived of the bathroom, appalling cell rooms, and isolation for weeks at a time – these are the experiences of Palestinian minors during their arrest and interrogation by Israeli security forces. In a detailed letter to the AG based on 21 affidavits obtained by DCI-Palestine, Adalah demanded an end to the torture and ill-treatment of detained Palestinian children, the opening of criminal investigations, and to hold accountable those responsible for these practices.
