Delegation of Arab Political Leaders and Representatives from Adalah Embark on Study Tour to South Africa on Constitution-Making

A delegation composed of representatives of Arab political parties represented in the Knesset, the High Follow-up Committee for the Arab Citizens of Israel and Adalah have traveled to South Africa to undertake a one week study tour focusing on constitution making. The visit was organized with the support of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) with the aim of examining the academic aspects of the process of drafting the South African Constitution in 1994. The visit will include meetings with academics from the HSRC, lawyers from the Legal Resources Center, staff of human rights organizations, and ministers, members of the parliament (National Assembly) and officials from the African National Congress (ANC).

The delegation is comprised of Mr. Shawqi Khatib, Chairman of the High Follow-up Committee for Arab Citizens of Israel, Member of Knesset (MK) Sheikh Ibrahim Sarsour (United Arab List), MK Dr. Jamal Zahalka (National Democratic Assembly-Balad), MK Attorney Taleb al-Sana (United Arab List), Mr. Ramez Geraisy (the Mayor of Nazareth), Professor Marwan Dwairy, Chairperson of Adalah’s Board of Directors, Attorney Hassan Jabareen, the General Director of Adalah, and Ms. Fathiyya Hussein, the Administrative Director of Adalah.

The visit is part of a series of international advocacy initiatives aimed at implementing the decision made by the High Follow-up Committee in response to the decision of the Israeli Attorney General to close the October 2000 cases, and to consolidate ties between the Arab public in Israel and the South African government and civil society.
