Thursday, September 28, 2000
- Likud Chair, Ariel Sharon and other Likud MKs
visit Haram Al-Sharif (the Temple Mount) causing widespread protests by
Palestinians in East Jerusalem.
Friday, September 29, 2000
- Demonstrations continue leaving six unarmed
Palestinians killed and hundreds injured in bloody clashes with the Israeli
army and police forces before and after Muslim prayer. Israeli border police,
police and special forces attacked worshipers inside the Al-Aksa mosque
compound with live ammunition, rubber bullets and tear gas.
Saturday, September 30, 2000
- Confrontations spread throughout the West Bank and the
Gaza Strip, increasing the number of those dead and injured.
- The High Follow Up Committee for Arab Affairs in
Israel calls a general strike for the following day (Sunday) in response to
the violence.
Sunday, October 1, 2000
- Thousands of Palestinian citizens of Israel
participate in the general strike and demonstrate throughout the country in
solidarity with Palestinians in the Occupied Territories. Clashes between
unarmed Palestinians and police erupt in Palestinian towns in Israel
including:
Jaffa- The main
road, Rehov Yeffet, was blocked as police clashed with stone- throwing
protestors. More than 10 people were wounded and 13 arrests were made.
Arrabe-Police used live
ammunition against the demonstrators.
Nazareth -Local hospitals
treated 25 injured, police reported 32 injured.
Umm
Al-Fahm
-Police used live ammunition, tear gas and rubber bullets. 60 people were
injured including the Mayor, Sheikh Ra’ed Sallah. Mohammed Ahmed Jabarin
(24) was shot dead, and
Ahmed Ibrahim Jabarin (19) died
the next day in the hospital from injuries sustained from a shot in the abdomen.
Monday, October 2, 2000
- General strike continues in response to police
brutality during the previous days.
- Funerals were held for the two Palestinians who died
on Sunday in Umm Al-Fahm. Tens of thousands of mourners attended.
- Violent clashes continue between police and
demonstrators in several Palestinian towns in Israel including Umm al Fahm,
Majd el Krum, Dir el Assad, Me’eliya, Kufr Kanna, Taibeh, Yaffa, Laqiyah,
Rahat, Tamrah, Shfar’am, Haifa. Specifically in:
Nazareth
-Police occupied the town and conflict ensued for nearly two hours with live
ammunition and police sniper-fire from rooftops. Eyad Sobhi Lawabny (29)
was killed by the police.
Arrabe- 2 young men were
brutally killed during clashes-Ala Khaled Nassar (22) and Aseel Hassan
Atilli (17).
Sakhnin-2 killed: Emad Faraj
Ghanem (25) and Waleed Abd el-Menem Abu Saleh (21)
Jatt- Rami Gharra (21) dies from shot in
the eye received on 1 October.
Tuesday, October 3, 2000
- General strike continues due to the ongoing violence
and police brutality of the previous days. Funerals for the six who died
on Monday are held.
- Ramez Bushnaq
(25) from Kfar Manda dies from gunshots to the head, leg, and chest by the
police.
Wednesday, October 4, 2000
- Muhammed Khalib Hamaysa (21) from Kfar Kana dies from injuries sustained on
Tuesday.
Thursday, October 5-Friday October 6, 2000
- Sporadic clashes with the police occur in Arab towns
and villages throughout Israel.
Saturday, October 7, 2000
- Jewish Israeli citizens attacked mosques in Tel
Aviv-Jaffa, Tiberias and Hadera.
- Jewish Israeli citizens destroyed Arab property in
several towns.
- In Tiberias, several Arabs were severely beaten by
groups of Jewish Israelis
Sunday, October 8, 2000
- Barak sets a 48-hour ultimatum for Yasser Arafat to
stop Palestinian violence.
- Omar Mohammad Akawi (42) and Wasam Yizbek (25), two Palestinian
citizens of Israel, are killed when hundreds of Jewish residents from Nazareth
Illit attacked the eastern neighborhood of Nazareth. They hurled stones
and shot at Palestinian houses, attempted to set the houses on fire and fired
live ammunition at Palestinians. Police protected the Jewish Israelis
and allowed them to continue their attack on Palestinian citizens of
Israel. Akawi was killed with live ammunition. Four other
Palestinian citizens of Israel were brought to the hospital in critical
condition. 25 Palestinians were injured.
- Jewish Israelis attack the home of Arab MK Azmi
Bishara in Nazareth Illit
Monday, October 9, 2000
- 80,000 mourners attend the funerals of the two
Palestinians killed on Sunday October 8.
- Barak extends the 48-hour ultimatum
- 500 Jewish Israelis riot in Tel Aviv and clash with
police. 12 are injured.
- In Carmiel, 1,000 Jewish Israelis demonstrate and
destroy public property.
