Adalah represented both Ra’am (United Arab List), and Balad/Tajammu’ (The National Democratic Assembly), on requests by right-wing groups to disqualify them from running in the Israeli election, which is set to take place on 1 November 2022.

The Central Elections Committee rejected the motions to disqualify Ra’am but voted to disqualify Tajammu’. Adalah appealed that decision, on behalf of Tajammu’ to the Israeli Supreme Court (SC).

The SC unanimously ruled in a 9-0 decision, on 9 October 2022, that Tajammu’ can run in the upcoming election. The SC agreed with Adalah that the right-wing party 'Anahno' presented no evidence to justify the disqualification of the political party list.

Dr. Hassan Jabareen, Adalah's General Director and the lead counsel for ‘Tajammu stated: “The Supreme Court's decision was made in light of the laconic request that ignored all the court’s previous rulings on this very same question. It must be made unequivocally clear that parliamentary action promoting a vision of democracy and equality – ‘a state for all its citizens’ - cannot be grounds for denying the right to participate in the political process."

Adalah joins the fight to free Ahmad Manasra

On 3 October 2022, Adalah and attorney Khaled Zabarqa filed a motion to the Supreme Court demanding to overturn a lower court's decision denying the early release of Ahmad Manasra, a Palestinian youth who was arrested for attempted murder in 2015, at the age of 13, and who was held for lengthy periods in solitary confinement. Despite his deteriorating mental health condition, which requires, according to doctors, medical aid outside of prison, the District Court upheld a parole committee's decision to deny him early release.

An amendment to the 2016 Counter-Terrorism Law allowed the parole committee to determine retroactively that Ahmad’s actions, even as a minor, constituted a “terror act”, and therefore made him ineligible for early release.

Adalah Attorneys Nareman Shehadeh-Zoabi and Adi Mansour, the legal representatives of Ahmad commented that: "This case clearly illustrates why sweeping, blanket sentencing ignores an individual’s particular circumstances and contradicts the most basic principles of justice. The Counter-Terrorism Law has proven to be one of the most dangerous tools available to Israeli authorities. It has enabled them to create a separate, draconian legal mechanism that is applied only to Palestinians, even before civilian courts.”

22 years for October 2000 killings,
Israel still grants sweeping impunity to its police forces

On 1 October 2022, Adalah marked the 22nd anniversary of the October 2000 killings. Following mass protests by Palestinian citizens of Israel (PCI) in October 2000, Israeli police opened fire at demonstrators, shooting 13 Palestinians dead and injuring hundreds of others.

Over two decades later, Israel still grants sweeping impunity to its police and military forces, as well as for Israeli Jewish civilian vigilantes when Palestinians are killed or wounded. Adalah continues to fight for justice and accountability for all Palestinians before Israeli courts and other authorities, and calls upon the international community to protest Israel’s ongoing crimes and human rights violations against Palestinians.
