Adalah’s News

12 January 2023
The new Israeli government has already made explicit its intent to further entrench Jewish supremacy and the repression of Palestinians throughout Israel and in the occupied West Bank via a two-tiered, segregated system of governance at all levels. The government’s agenda signals an escalation of apartheid policies and reaffirms the state’s clear denial of Palestinians' right to self-determination.

In a new position paper, Adalah lays out how the guiding principles and coalition agreements of the new Israeli government are intended to consolidate Jewish supremacy and racial segregation as the underlying principles of the Israeli regime. To do so, the new government is building on the state’s preexisting mechanisms of suppression and segregation to deepen state control.
In the position paper, Adalah identifies the main provisions of the new government’s coalition agreements that threaten the fundamental rights of Palestinian citizens of Israel and Palestinians living in the OPT, including: Deepened political control over law enforcement and policing, which will allow to intensify racial policing and stiffen criminal penalties, especially for Palestinians; Accelerated Judaization of the Naqab, Galilee, and beyond; Curbing the prohibition of discrimination in services and products; A new basic law on immigration; Discrimination in education; Impunity for the armed forces; Silencing criticism against Israel; Allowing candidates running for the Knesset to incite racism while undermining Palestinian political participation; Separate and unequal public funding for Palestinian localities in Israel; Limiting of the Supreme Court’s authority; and the de facto annexation of the West Bank.

The guiding principles of the new government indicate clear criminal intent on the part of the coalition members to commit crimes under the Rome Statute, including crimes against humanity (namely, the crime of Apartheid) and war crimes. The initiatives and policies of the new government require urgent intervention by international bodies, including the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice, and the reconstitution of the UN Special Committee against Apartheid.

Adalah will stand against the onslaught of the new government's racist policies and laws to defend the rights of Palestinians in Israel and the Occupied Territories.
