October 2018
The Knesset is back.

We’re ready for them.
Dear friends,

In the late hours of the final day of its summer session, on 19 July 2018, the Israeli Knesset passed the “Jewish Nation-State Law”, a constitutional anchor that enshrines the superior rights of Jewish citizens, while entrenching the ethnic inequality and exclusion of Palestinian citizens of Israel.

This law, whose provisions are distinctly characteristic of apartheid, is a major blow to the struggle for equality and justice. But our fight to overturn it has only just begun.

Adalah took swift legal action on behalf of the Palestinian political leadership in Israel – represented by the High Follow-Up Committee, the National Committee for Arab Mayors, and the Joint List – by petitioning the Israeli Supreme Court to cancel the new law.

Our analysis of the far-reaching implications of the legislation was widely used and cited by journalists, legal experts, activists, and political representatives, thus allowing us to shape and inform the public debate about the law in Israel/Palestine and abroad.

Adalah and its partners rallied international awareness by meeting with UN officials in Geneva, policy analysts in London, and grassroots activists in Minneapolis. As general director, I met with U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders in Washington D.C., who just days later in a speech described the Nation-State Law as legislation that “essentially codifies the second-class status of Israel’s non-Jewish citizens”.

Israel's government recently made three shocking claims: The Knesset can make laws everywhere in the world, it can violate the sovereignty of foreign states, and it is allowed to ignore international law anywhere it desires.
The Knesset, which returns for its winter session this week, is now preparing to advance additional discriminatory and anti-democratic bills that would harm the rights of Palestinians in Israel and in the Occupied Territory.

These include a series of “annexation laws” which, if enacted, would allow Israel to seize more land from Palestinians living in the occupied West Bank and annex hundreds of Israeli settlements to the state.

Adalah is currently battling the most dangerous of these laws in the Supreme Court: the Settlement Regularization Law, which legalizes scores of West Bank settlement outposts built on private Palestinian property. The state’s startling response to our petition reveals Israel’s explicit dismissal of international law and its determination to advance its expansionist plans.

Israel’s dangerous legislative campaign must be stopped – and you can help us. As we move into winter, Adalah will be:
  • Launching legal challenges against Israel’s new discriminatory laws;
  • Advocating to diplomats and policymakers in the U.S., EU., and U.N.;
  • Raising public awareness of the Nation-State Law and annexation laws.
Donate to Adalah today.

Join us in putting the Knesset’s discriminatory agenda in check.

In solidarity,

Hassan Jabareen, Adv.
Adalah General Director
