WE WON!


Following Adalah's lawsuit, the Municipality of Afula was ordered by court on 14 July to end its ban on non-residents from entering a public park in the city.

The ban, which was issued following an election promise by Afula Mayor Avi Elkabetz, was deliberately aimed at blocking Palestinian citizens who live in surrounding communities from using the park.

The case – which was widely covered in local and international media – ensures that Palestinian families in Israel can enjoy free access to the public park.

This positive result effectively rebukes the city and its mayor for their racist policies. But our work is not over yet.

Afula's actions come in the wake of the Jewish Nation-State Law, passed one year ago this month, which declares the state's identity solely as Jewish and essentially enshrines racial discrimination as a constitutional duty.

It is the spirit of this law that encouraged Mayor Elkabetz to take part in a protest against the sale of a home in the city to Palestinian citizens of Israel. And it is what encouraged Afula's newly-elected city council members to be sworn into office pledging to preserve the city's Jewish character.
For Adalah to continue its fight against such racism and discrimination in Israel, we need your support.
