Opening Remarks
During the six years since the October 2000 events, not a single indictment has been filed against any of those responsible for the killing of the 13 youths and injuring of hundreds of others. The report of the Ministry of Justice’s Police Investigation Unit (Mahash), published in 2005, found no police officer or commander responsible. The law-enforcement authorities deliberately ignored the substantial evidence gathered by the Or Commission and buried its findings, especially regarding the responsibility of the individual shooters and the illegal use of snipers. A high-ranking commander, Benzi Sau, who the Or Commission found to have seriously failed in performing his duties, has been repeatedly promoted since October 2000. Adalah’s report, which will be published this October and submitted to the Attorney General, will prove that Mahash invested all its efforts into exonerating those responsible, not into uncovering the truth. The principles of fairness and decency compel an investigation to be launched into the investigators of Mahash for their serious failures.
