Professor Marwan Dwairy, Chair of Adalah’s Board of Directors, Named Among Ten Top Researchers in the World who has Contributed to and Influenced Academic Research in the Field of Multicultural Psychology

Academic research conducted by a team of researchers into individuals and academic institutes that carry out research in the subject of multicultural psychology has determined that Professor Marwan Dwairy, the Chair of Adalah’s Board of Directors, is one of the ten top researchers in the world to have contributed to and influenced this important field. (See Lau, M. Y., Cisco, H. C., & Delgado-Romero, E. A. (2008).  Institutional and individual research productivity in five nominated multicultural psychology journals. Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development, 36, 194-205).

The team of researchers reached their findings after reviewing and evaluating academic works published in the field of multicultural psychology around the world, and graded their academic value. Professor Dwairy was the only Arab named among the top ten researchers. African-American researcher Madonna Constantine from Columbia University headed the list of researchers, and the University of California – Los Angeles was named the top university. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem was ranked 26th out of academic institutes working in this field.

Professor Dwairy has published tens of academic articles and books. His most recent book is “Psychotherapy for Arabs and Muslims,” which was published in English by Columbia University in the United States. He is currently heading an international research team that is conducting research into the relationship between different kinds of family upbringing and the psychological well-being of children in nine countries around the world.

In his academic writings Professor Dwairy critically analyses common Western theories of psychology and reveals their shortcomings and occasionally the damage they cause when applied in Eastern-collective communities. He also develops theories and methods of treatment that are sensitive to cultural background, given that the vast majority of peoples in the world live in Eastern-collective communities. Because of his contribution in this field, he has been invited to a large number of international conferences to present on the theories and methods of treatment that he has developed.

Adalah's Board and staff warmly congratulate Professor Dwairy on this great honor.
