Government Press Office to Reinstate Press Credentials of Palestinian Journalist

On 12 May 2002, during a hearing before the Israeli Supreme Court, the Attorney General's office announced that the Government Press Office (GPO) would reinstate the press credentials of Ms. Layla Odeh, a Palestinian journalist working for Abu Dhabi TV, pending the outcome of GPO internal procedures pertaining to the case. The GPO revoked Ms. Odeh's press credentials on 2 April 2002, following allegations by GPO director Mr. Daniel Siman that Abu Dhabi TV was broadcasting false information and inciting against Israel.

On 5 April 2002, Adalah filed a petition to the Supreme Court against Mr. Siman demanding the reinstatement of Ms. Odeh's press credentials. The petition was filed by Adalah Staff Attorney Suhad Bishara on behalf of Ms. Odeh and I'lam Media Center for Palestinian Society.

The Attorney General's office stated that Ms. Odeh's press credentials would be reinstated pending the completion of internal procedures within the GPO. If, following these procedures, the GPO decides again to revoke her credentials, she will be given one week before such a decision is implemented.
