Adalah responds to defeat of proposed Israeli 'cameras law'

Adalah: Proposed law would never have pass a constitutional litmus test; sole purpose of bill was to influence upcoming elections via racial incitement and overt attacks on law enforcement and the very rule of law itself.

Adalah – The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel responded Monday afternoon, 9 September 2019, to the defeat of the Likud party's proposed "cameras law" that would allow the deployment of surveillance cameras in polling stations in Arab communities on Israeli election day:

"This bill – whose sole purpose was to influence the upcoming elections via racial incitement and overt attacks on law enforcement bodies and the very rule of law itself – has already caused harm by injecting bald-faced lies into the public political discourse under the premise of preserving the 'purity of elections'.

"It is now abundantly clear to all that this proposed law would never pass a constitutional litmus test. Now is the time to launch a criminal investigation into the Likud party's covert surveillance camera operation in the April election. Indeed, evidentiary materials handed over to police confirmed that the mere deployment of the cameras in polling stations interfered with the proper course of the elections."
